New book!
"Each chapter relies heavily on warm, humorous dialogue that reveals characters bursting with personality, their friendship based on mutual respect and caring, as well as touches of laugh-out-loud silliness—as all forever-friendships should be. Young readers will be delighted by these two and will clamor to join them for forthcoming adventures." KIRKUS STARRED REVIEW

Bio

I grew up in the snowy city of Bangor Maine. When I wasn’t building award-worthy snow forts and making snow angels, I spent a lot of time reading. I also liked writing poems and stories. I wrote my very first picture book, Fredfoot the Frog, in second grade. Although it did not get published, I did receive a “great job” sticker from my teacher.

I like:
reading, knitting, baking bread, writing (of course!)
coffee, traveling, walking really fast, and too many other things that won't fit inside this circle!
My first published children's story appeared in Spider Magazine. It's called "Not-So-Ordinary Cows". Since then I have published three picture books (Abrams Books For Young Readers 2005, 2006, 2008) and two middle grade novels (Holiday House 2012) and my latest, Lizzy and the Good Luck Girl (Running Press Kids/Hachette, 2018). My work has also been published in Highlights Magazine.
I live in Massachusetts with my husband David and a giant poodle named Bailey. We have two grown-up daughters who don't live at home anymore but come to visit when they can. My dog Bailey keeps me company when I write but sometimes barks if too much time passes and he's not getting enough attention. Here he is dressed up as a cat in a sweater for Halloween. It's an homage to my novel Lizzy and the Good Luck Girl. If you want to know why that is, you will have to read the book to find out!
I don't like:
spiders
traffic jams
elevators
laundry

SHOW DON’T TELL
Using writing tools including dialogue, action verbs and our five senses students will learn to add punch and excitement to their writing. Pulling ideas from my “think outside the box” box the students participate in a fun and interactive “show don’t tell” writing exercise.
BUILD A STORY
Using a variety of story prompts, students will create the beginning paragraph or chapter of their own story.
THE WRITER'S LIFE
Where do my ideas come from? How do I find inspiration? Drafting, character building, setting & revision will also be discussed.
